On Long Island, the issue of climate change and sea-level rise hits close to home. Literally.
In Levittown, we should stay high and dry even by the highest end-of-century estimates for sea level rise (7 feet by 2100). It would take a 100-foot rise in sea level to drown our Ford showroom, and even more before Hicksville goes under the surf -- but it could happen, eventually, if the ice sheets on Antarctica and Greenland melt.
Losing inland areas will be a problem for our great-grandkids to worry about, but it would only take a 3-foot rise to say "adios" to Jones Beach.
So what can you, and your quest to buy a new car, do about it? How can we save the beach together?
We're proud to say that Ford Motor Company has been striving for two decades to craft vehicles using more sustainable manufacturing processes, including introducing soy-based foam to replace petroleum-based foams in the seat cushions of nearly every new model.
Now, Ford is embarking on a quest to actually capture climate-change-causing CO2 from the air, and convert it into durable plastics and foams for building cars. Ford researchers estimate that CO2-based plastics could reduce petroleum use by 600 million pounds annually.
We all want to protect the planet, but sometimes bicycling everywhere isn't an option. Check out a more sustainable way to drive, by browsing new vehicles at Levittown Ford LLC, including flexible high-efficiency options like the Fusion Energi, which can make short around-town commutes without burning a drop of fuel, but can also drive long distances by combining the power of gas and electricity.
