Ford is investing $4.5 billion in electric cars, with the expectation that the plug-in hybrid will be the best-selling segment.

What's so special about a plug-in? Just compare the Ford C-Max Hybrid with the plug-in C-Max Energi.

Both get excellent fuel economy, offer 188 combined horsepower, and can reach 85 miles per hour on electricity alone.

Ford thinks drivers will be more drawn to the C-Max Energi, however, because it has the potential to get considerably better fuel economy, and is the most versatile and flexible electric vehicle option.

How much better fuel economy?

That depends upon how you drive. When charged from a standard outlet or a charging station, the C-Max Energi can operate on electric power alone -- meaning zero gasoline is burned, and zero carbon is emitted as you drive.

If you plan your trips accordingly, it's possible to never use any gasoline at all.

The C-Max Energi allows drivers to select from three different modes. Auto EV optimizes your efficiency by using electricity at low speeds, and adding a boost from the gasoline engine at higher speeds and to give you passing power. EV Now pops the vehicle into pure electric mode. EV later lets you run on gas power to save electricity for later.
